From many surveys it has come out that the number of Kidney patient is increasing day by day. In a survey, a terrible news came out with the explanation of what and how is the condition in Bangladesh in terms of Kidney Diseases. In this survey it has found that 10 years ago the number of kidney patient was about 10 millions where it has now increased tremendously to about 18-20 million. So last 10 years or so it has increased twice than it was before. The reason for this incredible increasing rate is basically Diabetics, High Blood-pressure and besides that a kidney disease called Nephritis which attacks kidney’s filter membrane. If we have a look on the reasons of Kidney diseases in Bangladesh it is found that, 40% of the victims are suffering from various Nephritis diseases, 24% of the kidney failures are caused by Diabetics and 15% of the kidney damage are caused by High Blood-pressure.

Generally a Kidney disease keeps silent or hidden inside a human body. In primary stages no symptom’s shows if it is not Nephritis. In case of Nephritis some symptoms are detectable in primary stages. Records from Kidney Foundation show that every year 40 thousand people die suffering chronic kidney disease in Bangladesh. Amongst these 15-20 thousands people dies on sudden kidney failure. The main reasons for kidney damage are diseases from Diarrhoea, taking unprescribed & unplanned antibiotic medicine in various ways. Besides this people in rural areas used to take Homeopathic and Kobiraji medicines for various reasons what causes sudden kidney failure. There are only a few hospitals in Bangladesh to cover this vast amount of kidney patients. When a kidney of a person is completely damaged he/she can only be saved by regular dialysis or kidney transplantation. But as far as the economical condition in Bangladesh we know it’s quit unaffordable for the ordinary people to bear these costly medical services like kidney transplant or Dialysis. When a person lives on Dialysis, it costs 2-3 lakhs Taka per year. In terms of kidney transplantation primarily it costs 4-5 lakhs Taka and 80-100 thousands Taka on medicines. It can also be seen from analysis and researches that only 5% of the total kidney patients are capable of bearing the cost of kidney transplantation in case of kidney damage. Rests of 95% are unable to hold these costs. In our country there are only a few hospitals that are providing Dialysis facilities. Government although providing some facilities for the poor people where the non-government hospitals are too expensive and out of range for the ordinary people.

In this time of anxiety, to provide low cost Dialysis and transplantation facilities to the poor people Kidney Foundation was born in the year of 2002. It’s built by some professor doctors, social workers, donors and some ordinary people. The official lunching time for the foundation was Oct’2003. Kidney Foundation is registered by Office of the Social Welfare, Government of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh. It is also registered as a NGO by the government. All donations made to Kidney Foundation are totally Tax Free. The foundation started its journey with the fund of only 60000tk along with a 40000tk rented house and 6 Dialysis machines.

Now Kidney Foundation is running its own hospital at House No.6, Road no-8, Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The foundation started its journey with the fund of only 60000tk along with a 40000tk rented house and 6 Dialysis machines. The main objective of the foundation was to provide dialysis and transplantation facilities to the kidney patients at a very low cost. Kidney foundation started providing dialysis at only 650tk where it is about 1500-2500tk or more than that in non-government hospitals or centers. They provide Laboratory services at 30% less cost comparing to others and only 20tk outdoor service. Even in terms of specialist’s doctor’s checkup foundation only charges only 100-150tk. In the beginning of the foundation when it was just started, they haven’t had sufficient balance to makeup this low costs. So they asked for donations and in the process some donors made some cordial participation. Coming out from that situation, at present Kidney Foundation now made up to built a 20 bed dialysis unit. For the last fourteen month, kidney foundation has been continuously transplanting at least one kidney per week. Even now the dialysis, Special doctor service and outdoor service expenses are same as 650tk, 20tk and 100-150tk. Foundation is providing laboratory facilities to the dialysis patients at 50% less cost and others at 30% less expense.
